I grew up a good girl. Seriously. I doubt I said ‘damn’ five times before I was thirty – unless, of course, I was quoting Scripture.
My first husband (now late), on the other hand, was constantly looking for a chance to slip in a colorful word or two. When he was four he asked his mom, “Mommy, how do you spell ‘shit’?” She very wisely replied, “L O V E.” So he hopped on his tricycle and cavalierly drove around the back yard, shouting, “L O V E L O V E L O V E…”
My thinking about words has matured somewhat. I don’t especially shy away from any particular word. My interest is communication, and if one word communicates to a certain audience more effectively than another word, I will choose the effective word.
So, hey! Y’all Christian Conservatives, or whatever words you use to describe yourself, let’s not be afraid of words. People who are trying to manipulate and divide us will use our fears as a handle to shake us up.
You should read how the U.S. media used colorful words to describe Haiti back in 2004.
